TEFL Analysis


1.  Role of Interactive Teacher

  • In the Debate activity, teacher can be as controller.   Because in this activity students can express their ideas by themselves, and teacher can control what students do, when they should speak, and what language forms they should use. And also in this activity teacher map out ahead of time to organize the class hour.
  • In the writing lesson activity, teacher can be as director. Because in this activity students still need to be directed, for example teacher direct student to write which kind of text they have to write such descriptive, narrative, or hortatory text, and then teacher  asks  students to organize their text into introduction, discussion, and conclusion, etc.
  • In the presentation activity, teacher can be as manager. Because in this activity students can take place in teacher’s job and they work in their own creativity but they still need to be given plan lessons, modules, or topic course by teacher. And in this situation teacher as manager of class activity.
  • In the Discussion activity, teacher can be as Facilitator.  Because in this activity students practice their language ability (speaking ability) by exploring their own ideas and in this activity they can get feedback to each other so that they get the language from it. In this situation teacher give access to student to develop their language by practicing it.
  • In the consultation Before Presentation, teacher can be as Resource. Because teacher can give advice or solution to solve student’s problem about the material that they will present.


2.  Classify Categories of Questions
§      Elementary School:  Knowledge questions, because in this category, type of question is easy and suitable for children under teen such memorizing of who, what, where, when.

§      Junior High School:  Comprehension questions, because in this category, type of question is suitable for teenager such indicate or define the meaning of something.


§  Senior high school:  for adolescent the suitable questions is using Application questions because in this stage students can be able to apply their ability depend on the information that they have read or heard.

§      Bachelor Degree (S1):  Analysis Question, because in this stage students can be able to solve problem or to answer the question by analyze it such explain the relationship, the function of something.  



3. Why English for specific Purposes (ESP)   is suitable to Content- Based Instruction?

  • Because ESP is generally assuming language that appropriate to the genre of students with specific goal of study. It is about acquiring knowledge and skills depend on the concept and content of study So that this is being categorized in Content-Based Instruction. For example: Jenny as EFL use English in her learning about Business and Management or Tourism professional. She learns to be able to use English for her purpose, and she learns how to understand the content of Business and Management or Tourism Professional but not focus on how the process of the language itself.

4. one example of experimental learning (learning by doing)

  • Cross-cultural experiences: Using Dinner Group.
  •  Student will divide into 3 group
  •  Group 1  will be the host holder (Indonesia)  and  the other will be the visitor from Australia and Canada
  •  They speech like in real situation: greeting, speak lip service, and let to dinner together.
  • Situation:
  • 1. in the kitchen; cooking for (Javanese food or etc.)
  • 2. in the terrace; greeting, lip service,
  • 3. In the reception room; asking for conditions / trip, talking about each culture, next let to move on the dinning room
  • 4. In the dinning room; introducing special food (makanan khas), asking for how the dishes are made.
  • 5. Farewell; saying thank for dinner.


5.  Why TBI is weak version? And Why CBI is strong version?

  • Why TBI is weak version?
Because Theme-Based Instruction is a method of organizing teaching around subject matter area, students focus only on the relevant or interest topic, these topics may adhere from their institutional. Students may discuss, debate, read and write about the issue in subject matter area, but they do not learn to deal their real purpose / long-term goals.

  • Why CBI is strong version?
Because Content-Based Instruction is pointed toward strength of learning principles; this learning focuses on useful practical objective which relevant to long-term goals.
